Why Bernard is absent for Everton’s meeting with Burnley

Everton have provided an explanation for winger Bernard’s absence from the club’s squad to take on Burnley this evening.

Everton host Burnley

Carlo Ancelotti’s men are currently locked in action with the Clarets at Goodison Park, in a Premier League clash.

The matchup of course marks a crucial one at both ends of the table, with Everton attempting to upset the odds in securing a top-4 spot, whilst Burnley stave off relegation.

The hosts headed into proceedings in search of a bounce-back result, on the back of a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea earlier in the week.

Burnley, on the other hand, are aiming to build on an encouraging pair of draws – with Leicester and Arsenal respectively.

As things stand early in the action on Merseyside, the scoreline remains locked at 0-0, with the best chance so far having seen Richarlison force a fine stop from Nick Pope in the visitors’ goal.

Bernard unwell

The starting XI opted for by Carlo Ancelotti this evening proved somewhat makeshift, particularly in midfield, with both Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez sidelined at present.

One surprise omission from the Blues’ squad, however, came in the form of Bernard.

The Brazilian has been in-and-out of the Everton side of late, often utilised as an impact substitute when Ancelotti and co. are in need of a goal.

As confirmed shortly before kick-off, though, Bernard has been struck down by what is described as a ‘non-Covid related illness’, and was unavailable for selection to face Burnley as a result:

*Update* – Burnley have since taken the lead through Chris Wood.
