Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho ‘considering move’ for Southampton’s Jannick Vestergaard

A report from England over the weekend has credited Tottenham with an interest in Southampton defender, Jannick Vestergaard.

Vestergaard’s Southampton stint

Southampton signed Vestergaard from German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach in July of 2018, for a fee believed to be around €25m.

The 28-year-old has since gone on to notch 68 appearances in all competitions for the Saints, across which he has scored four goals.

Vestergaard did struggle somewhat for regular first-team action during the 2019/20 campaign.

However, barring a period in which he was sidelined with a knee injury, the Dane has since proven a key figure for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men so far this term, featuring 21 times in the league, including on Sunday when Southampton lost 2-1 to Brighton.

Tottenham eyeing Jannick Vestergaard

Now, though, it appears that the 20-time capped Denmark international is being eyed up by a Premier League rival.

According to a report from the Mirror this weekend, Jose Mourinho is keen on Vestergaard.

Mourinho is said to have made the signing of a new centre-back one of his top priorities for the forthcoming summer window, with Vestergaard high on the Portuguese’s list of targets.

No potential fee is mentioned in the report from the Mirror.

However, the stopper will have just one year remaining on his current contract come the summer.

So, if Southampton do not want to lose him for free next year, selling Vestergaard for a reduced fee ahead of next season is probably their best option.
