Pep Guardiola has explained how he feels Manchester City’s Phil Foden can improve his game.
Foden impressing
Phil Foden has enjoyed a sensational 2020/21 campaign to date.
Previous seasons had seen Pep Guardiola limit the youngster’s minutes, especially in big games.
However, recent months have seen the 20-year-old establish himself as a crucial member of Man City’s attack.
All told, Foden has notched 11 goals and six assists in 33 outings across all competitions – including a superb showing en route to a 4-1 drubbing of Liverpool last month – during which he provided both a goal and assist.

Guardiola on Foden
Despite his excellent season to date, however, Pep Guardiola evidently believes that there is much more to come from the England international.
Speaking recently, the Spaniard explained how Foden, who he labelled ‘a top player’, can go on to become an ‘exceptional’ one.
To do this, Guardiola suggested that Foden must stop playing football in one rhythm, and instead combine a series of ‘different rhythms’:
“He is a top, top player but still he is playing football in one rhythm and he has to combine different rhythms to be an exceptional player.
“He makes all the actions in one explosion. When you play in the middle you have to be more calm. Maybe it’s because he’s 20, he has incredible energy to do everything.
The City boss added:
“It doesn’t mean he’s going to change now. That comes with time and seasons… Every player at 28 is better than at 20 but he has the desire, he loves the club and I am pretty sure he will. If there’s one player that can do it he is the one.”
