Second Term
Joan Laporta has emerged victorious in the elections to become the next Barcelona President, winning over 54% of the vote.
In his previous run as President, from 2003 -2010, he oversaw one of the most successful periods in the clubs history as they won 12 trophies. The period saw the emergence of Pep Guardiola as a manager, Lionel Messi become the club’s talisman and the addition of two Champions League titles (2005-2006, 2009-2010) to the club’s honours board after only having won it once previously, in 1992.
However the club Laporta inherits is taking over is in a very different financial position to the one he left, with reported debt of 1.2 Billion euro debt, but it is the future of Messi, whose current contract expires in the summer, that is perhaps his most pressing issue.
Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, has shared comments that Laporta made on the subject.
Joan Laporta – new Barcelona president – to RAC1: “I will be calling Lionel Messi. Will I convince Leo to stay? It will depend on him, I will do what I can, within the economic possibilities of the club, to make him stay at Barça”. 🔵🔴 @HagridFCB #FCB #Barcelona

Messi’s future

The future of Messi, the club’s and arguably the world’s greatest ever player has been an ongoing story for some time.
Both Manchester City, who denied the rumours, and PSG have been heavily linked with the Argentinian superstar in the past and what was once unthinkable that he wouldn’t play his entire career with Barcelona, may become a reality.
Messi, who reportedly earns £122 million a season, is unaffordable for nearly every club that isn’t State backed, but may also now be for the Catalan giants.
We also don’t yet know of course if Messi wants to stay, so no doubt this is a story that will continue to dominate the the club’s news until it is resolved.
