Mauricio Pochettino discusses his return to PSG, Kylian Mbappe and Marcelo Bielsa

Life back in Paris

Former Tottenham manager and current PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino, who celebrates his 49th birthday today, has  spoken with the French Press on life back in Paris, Kylian Mbappe and Marcelo Bielsa amongst other things.

Pochettino, who replaced current Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel at PSG in early January after 13 months out of football, when asked what has changed in the 18 years since he left the club replied.

“For the most part, it has kept the same features. It is clear that there has been a change in almost twenty years for me too. Elsewhere I no longer have long hair but short. The evolution has been enormous but the most important is that the indentity continues, it is something that a club must never lose.”

The evolution no doubt refers to the take over of the club by the Qataris in 2011.

He was also asked about French superstar Kylian Mbappe of whom he said;

“He has the potential, he lacks nothing but time, We can not speed up the process. I believe that he is already among the best in the world, it takes time for him to flesh out his CV, to obtain the recognition he deserves and that he will obtain.”

Bielsa Influence

Pochettino also discussed the influence of Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa and whether he is a disciple of his.

“It’s true that a lot of Newell’s Old Boys coaches have come out. The influence of Jorge Griffa and Marcelo Bielsa has a lot to do with it. When there are educators at their level, their sudents learn well. They are leaders, personalities who inspire people. That’s the secret, I think their leadership, what they pass on.

“I am happy to have worked with him but I do not see myself as his student, because I did not do my training as a coach with him. I took another path, I was trained in Spain, in Las Rozas.”

He was also asked if he sees himself as a future coach of the Argentinian football team.

“There are also other very good Argentinian coaches, young like me too. It’s a question of timing. Jorge Griffa told me that football will take me where football wants. You have to be ready to all eventualities. I follow Jorge’s advice to the letter.”

Whether or not Pochettino moves into International football we will have to wait and see, but all eyes will be on his time at PSG to see if he can add the trophies that were lacking from his time at Spurs, despite doing a tremendous job.
