Solskjaer defends De Gea

David De Gea has been out of the Manchester United line-up due to the birth of his child with Dean Henderson coming in and performing well in the Spaniard’s stead.

This has led to questions regarding the Spanish international’s future at Old Trafford. Questions arising as to whether he should continue with the side or that Henderson should take on the role for the foreseeable future.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has since come out to defend the keeper and spoken of the level of quality which he has despite Henderson’s strong performances.

“You know, David has been here for 10 years and he has been absolutely brilliant for us. He has pulled off save after save, season after season, at the highest level,” he said.

“Dean is learning. Dean is getting better and better, he’s improving. There is no such thing as an undisputed No 1 here. You have got to perform.

“I’m not blind. I have seen the media in the last couple of weeks, with people writing David off. That is completely wrong. David is a top, top goalkeeper.

“He was allowed to go home for the birth of his first kid and Dean has come in and performed really well. I am sure he will play well again.”

There has been no word yet on when the De Gea will return but he may face an uphill battle ousting Henderson from the position.

De Gea, Martial & Cavani could leave

With the season nearing its end, many attentions are turning to the summer window and on how clubs can improve their squads through both the sale of surplus assets and recruitment of quality additions.

Manchester United will have a number of big decisions to make and reports suggest that some high-profile players could be on the move. The aforementioned De Gea could join Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani through the exit doors as Man Utd look shake up the squad according to the latest reports.

Cavani joined United from PSG and has gone to score in a number of crucial fixtures for the club but has not been able to nail down a regular starting position in the striking role.

Martial joined the club a number of seasons ago from Monaco and enjoyed a stellar 2019/20 campaign scoring 23 goals in 48 appearances. This season the Frenchman has only been able to muster 7 strikes which has made the Man United hierarchy consider possibly moving him on it seems.

Finally De Gea, who was on the verge of a move to Real Madrid only for it to fall through on deadline day in 2015, could finally leave the club after the emergence of Henderson at the club.

However, a move to Los Blancos seems unlikely with Thibaut Courtois the strong number one option. In fact, not many of Europe’s elite have a goalkeeping conundrum besides possibly Chelsea but the Blues have spent significantly on Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy. Where he could go is a mystery at present.
