“I don’t want to embarrass him” Tuchel says about how he plans to ‘close the gap’ with Olivier Giroud’s style

Tuchel compares Giroud to Cavani

Thomas Tuchel has seen a number of striking options used under his tenure already with Tammy Abraham and Timo Werner both given opportunities.

However, it was Olivier Giroud who stepped up in the Champions League to score a wonderful strike against Atletico Madrid to send Chelsea back to London with the one goal advantage and an away goal on their scorecard.

Tuchel has since compared his French forward with Edinson Cavani whom he managed during his time as PSG coach.

“Oli is 100 percent fit and has zero percent body fat, just like Edi. Like Oli, he is a player who, as number nine, always helps his team, who is ready to sacrifice himself. And in the box they both are excellent.” he said.

Giroud could again start for Tuchel who face two tough fixtures this week.

Tuchel closing the gap

Since Thomas Tuchel took over he has been working to close the gap with his Premier League competitors for a top four finish, the German coach has amusingly admitted that he has also wished to emulate his French striker’s fashion sense.

The former Dortmund coach admitted that since he arrived he has not had many clothes available to match the heights set by the stylish Frenchman but hinted that is about the change.

“I’m trying to close the gap, that is, the gap with Giroud At the moment it’s not easy because I just got here with one suitcase. So I don’t have a chance. But I’ll try to fill the gap so that Oli isn’t embarrassed that I’m his coach. I want to don’t embarrass him.”
