Georginio Wijnaldum provides fresh Liverpool contract update

Wijnaldum’s Liverpool stint

Georginio Wijnaldum has, of course, spent the last four+ years plying his trade with Liverpool.

In that time, the Dutchman has firmly cemented himself as an integral member of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield.

Despite his key role, however, the 30-year-old’s future at Anfield is actually somewhat up in the air at present.

Wijnaldum has entered the final year of his current Liverpool deal.

And despite having proven a key contributor to the Merseyside outfit’s success, an agreement over fresh terms, to this point, has not been found.

Reports last summer even went as far as to claim that the Premier League champions had no plans to offer Wijnaldum a new deal.

There have since been a number of further updates contradicting such info, though.

For example, The Athletic reported in December that both Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool want to keep Wijnaldum at Anfield.

Yet, three months later, there does not appear to have been much progress made regarding any potential deal.

The Reds have even been linked with a number of stars as potential Wijnaldum replacements, including Lille’s Renato Sanches.

And recent comments on the part of the Dutchman himself are unlikely to ease fears that an imminent free agent departure from Liverpool is indeed on the cards.

Speaking about his contract situation during a recent interview, Wijnaldum gave very little away, confirming that there is ‘no news’ at present:

“If you’re a fan and you support the team – you support the player and what they do with me.

“You want to hear what’s going to happen but on the other side, for me, if there’s nothing to say and no news I cannot say something.

“I hope they can understand that and I hope they will stay patient until there’s news.

“The most important thing right now is that we fix things in the game as a team and we get results.

“Talking about an individual, in this case about me and my contract situation – because I just said there’s no news, I think we can focus on better things than on my situation.

“When there is news, we will bring it out.”
