COVID-19: Kenya records 170 new cases, 213 recoveries, 3 deaths

The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that 170 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 4,648 tested in the last 24 hours.

The positivity rate is now at 3.7%, with total confirmed infections rising to 251,483 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,617,700.

From the cases, 166 are Kenyans while 4 are foreigners; 88 are females and 82 are males, while the youngest is an eleven-month-old child and the oldest is 97 years.

The cases were distributed across various counties as follows; Nairobi 35, Marsabit 25, Meru 13, Nakuru 9, Kiambu 8, Kakamega 6, Uasin Gishu 6, Murang’a 6, Baringo 4, Narok 4, Nyandarua 4, Laikipia 4, Siaya 4, Makueni 4, Garissa 3, Kericho 3, Kisii 3, Kitui 3, Machakos 3, Migori 3, Mombasa 3, Nandi 3, Trans Nzoia 3, Tana River 2, Homa Bay 2, Tharaka Nithi 2, Bomet 1, Bungoma 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Turkana 1 and West Pokot 1.

The ministry also revealed that 213 patients recovered from the coronavirus; with 111 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 102 were discharged from various health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries stand at 244,746.

However, 3 patients succumbed to the disease, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in October 2021. This pushes the cumulative deaths to 5,198.

“A total of 661 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 1,668 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program,” read a statement by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe.

“37 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 19 of whom are on ventilatory support and 18 on supplemental oxygen. No patient is under observation.”

CS Kagwe added: “Another 210 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 206 of them in general wards and 4 in High Dependency Units (HDU).”

He also stated that a total of 4,273,664 vaccines had so far been administered across the country as of October 12, 2021. Of these, 3,183,079 were partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated were 1,090,585.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 32.8%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 4.0%.
